"Riddle of Caste , Jaati or Jaat "

"Riddle of Caste , Jaati or Jaat "
Jaati is translation of Caste a Portuguese word casta , and most prevalent system in  medival Eurpean Society .When  Portugese landed in Indian soil they started  calling as "Caste' to a particular group of people involved in a particular profession . They could not understand difference between Varna and Jaat. In India it used to "Jaat" which means birth and an extended family tree  , it also denoted profession , and geographically a native place of a person . It was a more horizental system , where profession and Jaat both were interchangeable  which was trnsformed into a horizental and nonchangeale "jaati/caste " , by British and Christian missionaries intervention and interpretation of Indian society . Read M A Shering , who was fisrt christian missionary , who wrote "tribes and caste of India ".
From same book you can find that " Musahars , Banjaras , and Lonia Rajpoot " all of them used to do profession of Transporting Salt when India was economicaly a vibrant economy till 1820 . Later  on Musahars and Banjaras were categorised SC/ST , but Lonia Rajpoots became "Dwijas" ...It is a very complex history ...very difficult to understand .
pl read this , by connecting it with "Breaking of Salt law " by Mahatma Gandhi in 1935 .
